Rottnest Island is an island off the coast of Western Australia, located 18 kilometres west of Fremantle. Rottnest Island is about 30 kms west of WA's capital city of Perth. A sandy, low-lying island formed on a base of limestone, Rottnest Island is an A-class reserve, the highest level of protection afforded to public land. The only motor vehicles permitted on Rottnest Island are emergency and service vehicles, although there is also a bus service. Cycling is the transport of choice for most visitors, with many either bringing a bicycle with them or hiring one at the island's facility.
